What is the etiquette regarding giving a boss a gift in return?
Bruce T asked:
I am asking about etiquette (not legal opinions!). This year, the boss gave each employee a box of candy but it was really late (Dec. 21) and most (90%) ppl got the candy on January 7 because the offices were closed over Christmas and New Years and many ppl took off before Dec 21. Should we still go out and buy a gift for the boss?

Many bosses give out Christmas presents as a way of saying “thank you” for working hard during the year and don’t expect an exchange of gifts. If a boss gives a gift really close to Christmas where it is impossible for you to shop for a gift in return, then don’t sweat it. Since you got your gift well after the New Year, no need to buy a gift in return.

It is not necessary to give a gift in return. I frequently give my employees a small gift right before Christmas because I don’t want them to feel obligated to buy me anything. A nice thank you is plenty.

I have gotten a Christmas gift from my boss on the last day before Christmas vacation before and I just figured it was because that way I didn’t have time to get one and she just wanted to give me one without anything in return as a thank you, so I said “Thank you and Merry Christmas”.
