If your a woman, then take that card as fast as you can and shop for yourself! YOu go girl!!
And if it’s a GC for a dept. store–get stuff for your pets

Why not use the gift card to buy her a plant for her desk or a book that she might have mentioned she liked. She if you can’t recall something that she collects or is interested in. And then just give it to her and say that it’s a gift “just because”. I’m sure she’s feeling down, and this would be a way of saying you care.

You sound like a very caring and sensitive person. Kudos to you.

Etiquette pretty much demands that she give back all her gifts. I think the best thing you can do, is say you’re sorry to hear about the situation, and take the gift card. Perhaps you can get a refund or use it yourself.

I agree with the above poster, use the card on yourself or for another person, like a birthday or anniversary gift.

Accept the card back and say nothing more. Why would she want a gift reminding her of a failed love-affair/marriage. Or why would she want to buy something with it, with the same memory attached.

But a gift for yourself, or someone else.
