Sorry; i have to contradict what is written above: Ok, he wasn’t *that* high up in the charts back then, but he did get regular singing appearances on German tv shows. I know from painful experience because my little brother was about 10 back then and a fan. I still (vividly) remember Looking for Freedom, Crazy for you (that was so big there was actually a cover version called “Resi hol Bier”), Flying on the Wings of Tenderness, Is Everybody Happy and, worst of all, Do the Limbo Dance.
So there you have it. And contrary to what is written above, many Germans do know that he was an actor in the US and his tacky songs only made in big in some European countries because we didn’t know any better

It’s a myth that Hasselhoff is an especially big hit in Germany as a singer. The guy had all of two top-ten hits in 1989 and another one in 1993. No record of his has entered the top forty of the pop chart in ten years.
I guess you could make a CD that repeats “Looking for Freedom” (his sole number-one hit) over and over again, but I wouldn’t be sure that you friend “gets” it. Because, not only is Hasselhoff not big in Germany; Germans usually don’t know that Americans believe that he is.
