If you get a small x-mas bonus is it proper to buy the boss an expensive gift as part of the entire office?

The Boss’s favorite employee suggested we all chip in and buy an expensive gift after a small office party and a bonus check distribution by the company owner. The bonus for all was a blanket type with everyone getting the same amount of bonus. All checks were equal to about a days pay,that included taxes deducted.
