Interesting Art?
Tuesday, May 26th, 2009I have a most interesting piece of artwork. It is a drawing by Maurice Merlin (1939). This was given to me by my ex-father in-law (Ann Arbor, Michigan). He was a Psychiatrist until retirement. The story is most interesting! Mr. Merlin was an excellent portrait artist. He was out of money while in college (U of M??). A wealthy Russian lady asked Mr. Merlin to draw a picture of her house keeper’s daughter and in exchange, she would pay his way through college (the remaining year). He titled the drawing “Mexican Girl.” It is a VERY interesting and eerie drawing. The Russian lady later became my father-in-law’s client and gave this to him as a gift to hang in his office. My father-in-law said that some people tried to contact him and placed ads in the local papers trying to obtain this drawing on numerous occasions. He felt the GIFT should remain in his office until he retired. He then passed it on to me. How would I go about finding information out about the potential value of this drawing and the artist?
