(St) Valentines day: a religious holiday, commercial exploitation or bit of harmless fun?
Sirensong sunshine asked:
It today a genuine religious holiday, as it has a saint’s name – in whch case, how do people observe it? Is it another pagan/roman festival that later religions have appropriated, like Easter and Christmas? Or is it just another ‘Hallmark Day’ to help the grretings card and flower industries. What do we think, people?
Yeah I KNOW it’s not really a religious holiday, but surely, as it has a saint’s name adn is on a saints day there must be *someone* out ther ewho thinks they shoudl pray to St Valentine or something?
And if we all think it’s a big commercial exploitation game, why do we all go along with it…?

A commercial holiday that is a bit of harmless fun, as long as people do not go overboard.

commercial exploitation? you think expressing love is commercial exploitation? by your logic, i could say birthdays and weddings are commercial exploitation.
besides… saint could just mean a virtuous benevolent person.

It is not a Catholic holiday, although there was supposed to be a Catholic priest named Valentine in ancient Rome who was sentenced to death for marrying couples, later named the patron saint of those in love. Today it has become a commercial exploitation, but still a fun way to honor the one we love.

origionally a religous holiday(catholic) but admittedly for many it has become very commercial, much like christmas. however for true love i dont find anything wrong with people taking the time to do something nice and romantic.
for catholics it will be celebrated as a regular saints day, ie celebration of the mass.
unique gift
Commercialization of a traditional religious holiday that has morphed into a cultural “fun” holiday for couples and romantics (which is great for me — only I’m single).
birthday present
There is NO SCRIPTURAL BASIS FOR THIS!
Comercial exploitation.

In most people’s eyes, it has no religious significance (much like Christmas, Easter, etc.) So I’d say that it’s a festival holiday, nothing more. We need holidays like this to get closer to one another, so there’s no reason to drag any kind of religion into it.

Commercial exploitation

it’s not a religious holiday. in fact, a certain Pope took it out of the Calendar. how can you even say that it’s a religious holiday rather than a commercialized holiday for business people?
gift for dad
I don’t remember hearing about any saint handing out greeting cards, and heart-shaped boxes of chocolate…
I’ll go with Hallmark Day.
