Do you get an adult a graduation gift?
Mandy asked:
A friend of mine in his mid-30s is graduating from a Masters program that he’s been taking at night. We’ve been invited to a graduation party for him. What is the proper etiquette in terms of gifts? Do you get a gift? Just a card? If a gift, what kind of gift?

gifts for her
Wow, major accomplishment! I would definitely give a gift. You know your friend best; however, I would consider a gift certificate of some kind. Maybe a dinner for two at a nice restaurant, or something at a nice store.
You didn’t say what his degree is but, is there something useful in that line ie. if he is an attorney a nice pen and pencil set or briefcase? If he is single and lives alone you might consider some nice stemware.
perfect gift
Of course — going to night school and finally graduating with a Masters is an achievement. Your friend deserves a gift and a big pat on the back … GOOD JOB.
As far as what kind of gift, I really couldn’t tell you — he’s your friend. Get him something you know he is interested in or likes. I am sure he will appreciate any thing you give him in recognition of his achievement.
romantic gifts
Hmm. Proper etiquette among friends?!
I’d give him a gift to congratulate him on a job well done, and start him on the next chapter of his career: Bottle of whiskey should go over well.
