Why do Americans hang their flag outside their houses or work? Is it because of patriotism or is it a law?

Very General asked:
During a recent windstorm our flag was blown off and landed on the ground. I’ve thought about putting it in the washing machine, but feel it deserves to special treatment.
The other option is not doing anything – leaving the dirt as a symbol – “our flag was still there”.

My uncle left us a Japanese flag or insignia for a japanese fighting force. It has the names of the forces members written on it in Japanese. We think it would be better served being a part of a collection in a museum or with a collector. How can we find out what it is worth? Where would we find buyers who would be interested in buying it?

There is a giant flag that sometimes is displayed in Los Angeles along the 10 freeway close to Santa Monica. Sometimes it’s either a US flag or a POW/MIA flag, for a while there was a Green and White striped flag similar to the US flag and in the upper left corner a Yellow circle crossed with Yellow horizontal line. Anyone know the meaning of this flag?

I bought a flag at Depot with a “twist free” feature but it doesn’t work. I don’t want to spend another $13 or so on a kit online which may or may not work. Anyone got a cheap-do it yourself- idea? Thanks!

GSU asked:
A 1 kg flag is attached to a uniform horizontal flagpole (mass=5kg) where the flag hangs vertically. The pole is 5 meters long and the flag is attached at two points, namely the end and 1 meter from the end. What is the torque produced by the flagpole-flag combination where the pole is attached to the wall?

The flag doesn’t look like one that represents any country. It actually looks like a black and white USA flag, except the stars are replaced by something else that I can’t quite make out on the television. My theory is that the flag has something to do with the doping scandals in cycling. Any ideas?
