What should I do about my selfish mother?

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009
TennesseeGirl asked:

Mom is the guilt trip queen. She guilt trips me about not comign to visit her often, and my plans to move four states away. (1) she always put men before my brother and I (2) no showed at my wedding she says because her new husband instigated a fight with her and convinced her not to go (3) I finally forgave her and am civil and invited her to my husband’s military retirement ceremony which also invloves me (sort of a second chance thing to bond) She sent us a gift 4 months before saying in case you couldn’t make it… Guess what she made an excuse and didn’t. (4) She started a war with her brother’s/ sisters built a privacy fence between her house and theirs pissed them off then left the house to rot which was the home I grew up in. (5) expects me to call the home she shacked up in with her husband instead of my wedding my home. I am tired, going to school and working full time. Does she need to pull her head out of her *** or what? They have not once visited us.

What’s the etiquette here?

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009
anonymom asked:

I am hosting a retirement party tomorrow. Everyone has chipped in for a gift. The main part of the gift is a gift certificate to a B & B. There is also some wine, chocolates, travel bag. When I present the gift to the retiree, should I just give it to her and say we all pitched in for a special gift? Or do I specify that there is a gift certif for a B & B, a restaurant, etc?
I put everything in a basket; you can see everything, but there is a lot of stuff, so I didn’t know if I needed to clarify.

Can you help me stop spending $$$$?

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009
nottashygirl asked:

Any tips. We recently moved, and when we had the money, we bought new furniture, sheets, and decor for our new home. Christmas came, and I spent more money on gifts, etc. Now, I am still spending. I feel like I “need” a new purse, new pajamas, new cologne – all the things I didn’t get at Christmas I think. I am trying to make our life perfect, and have all the things we need, or deserve. At least that is my mentality. How do I stop this cycle? I have had issues in the past (a long time ago) with credit, and learned my lesson. I am paying for all of this with cash, but we need to start saving!!! We both need a retirement plan! I spend, and then feel guilty and nervous about money (due to my past experience), but keep doing it once the feeling passes. I need advice before the bank account dwindles more! Any tips would be good.

Should I be Suspicious?

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009
Rousseau asked:

My sons each pitched in a got me a Spa Weekend Getaway for Mother’s Day. The certificate is hand-printed on the back of an old AARP newsletter and the address is the same as Golden Years Retirement Home. Should I just enjoy this thoughtful gift from my 2 loving sons? I’m sure they went to a lot of trouble and expense for the perfect gift. They even offered to drop me off.

Transfer IRA to children, Taxable?

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009
tjlim asked:

My father is planning to transfer his IRA to me and my sisters IRA or UGMA/UTMA, equally.
He is not yet in retirement age. (below 65)

Is the transfer taxable?

*As far as I have heard, if he withdraws the IRA below retirement age, he would be taxable and we would be taxed as gifts.

is land contract bad?

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009
Old Corpse asked:

What do you know about land contract? I am thinking of buying a cheap (yes, that’s the best word, not “afforable” or bargain priced…LOL) mobile home. What do I care if it falls apart in 30 yrs? I will be old then. Maybe in a nursing home or retirement community. Sure, people like to will/gift an old house to thier children, but… by the time I am 60, I would hope that my 30 yr old kid has already bought her own home. She will not need the sale of my house to benefit her. Times change. people live longer now… wait… does that mean I should buy a stick built/block house? Please? someone help me! advice, please! I’m very lost. I’ll do whatever you tell me to do. I’m young. I don’t know the first thing about buying a house. It is suggested that I get FHA approval for my loan. But I have $15,000 for a down payment… or more ($8,000+).. (but I wanted to go shopping for new beds, matteresses, maybe even a used car, any appliances, stoves, washer dryer, dishwasher, needed)…
Thank you!!! Fascinating! excellent help everybody! wow! Yeah, I suppose an “older” mobile home would be much much “older” in 20 yrs, huh? what will I do? I’m not sure. But it is on , gasp, State land! The location is to DIE for. Surely, someone will want this property , purely based on the location, it has re Sale value! Awesome Idea though. WHERE will I live? if my mobile home falls apart?????? That’s a good question. Maybe I can save my usual “house payment” amount towards a new mobile home? Because this one will be paid off in 2-3 yrs if I use land contract? then, I can continue to place the normal “house payment” amount into a special savings fund? for next future mobile home??? maybe??? we all know how some people can not keep a strict savings. but this is really important!!!!! Besides, all that “extra” money would be pure profit. It should go into savings. How many beds and tvs can one person buy????? LOL

Interesting Art?

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009
larryctimm asked:

I have a most interesting piece of artwork. It is a drawing by Maurice Merlin (1939). This was given to me by my ex-father in-law (Ann Arbor, Michigan). He was a Psychiatrist until retirement. The story is most interesting! Mr. Merlin was an excellent portrait artist. He was out of money while in college (U of M??). A wealthy Russian lady asked Mr. Merlin to draw a picture of her house keeper’s daughter and in exchange, she would pay his way through college (the remaining year). He titled the drawing “Mexican Girl.” It is a VERY interesting and eerie drawing. The Russian lady later became my father-in-law’s client and gave this to him as a gift to hang in his office. My father-in-law said that some people tried to contact him and placed ads in the local papers trying to obtain this drawing on numerous occasions. He felt the GIFT should remain in his office until he retired. He then passed it on to me. How would I go about finding information out about the potential value of this drawing and the artist?
Larry
