Appropriate birthday gift for your boss?

I am a receptionist for a small wealth management firm and I need some advice. It’s my boss’s birthday on Labor Day and I really don’t know what would be an appropriate gift. I want to get him a little something, because he’s been quite helpful to me since I’ve started here (I’ve been here about 5 months). He’s maybe in his mid 60′s, conservative, seems to have everything! I don’t want to seem like a pushover either. Any suggestions as to what would be appropriate?

I don’t know where you’re writing from, so I can’t know the season you’re going through right now, if winter or summer.
If it’s winter, try with a nice pair of gloves, especially leather ones.
If it’s summer (or if you don’t like the idea of the gloves), try to get something small and decorative for his house, nothing too ostentatious. Go for something sober, maybe a nice and simple table center made out of dry flowers.

Maybe a fancy paperweight? Or, a nice pencil/pen holder.
Candy, who doesn’t like candy! A box of “Pot of Gold” chocolates, or a tub of gummi worms!
A watch? Maybe a golf club, even.
