Anyone have gift suggestions for son going elk hunting for the first time?
starlightrap asked:
My son hunts with both rifle and bow. He hunts deer but has been given a Christmas “hunt for elk”. Is there any equipment he would be grateful to have for this hunt? He wants to try and get the elk with his bow and mentioned arrows but I know nothing about them. I can’t afford an expensive rifle but maybe I could find a used one. Any help from experienced hunters would be appreciated.

First, I would recommend he stick with a rifle for his first elk hunt outside of the rut. I have listed several “have to have” pieces of equipment that are recommended as specific elk hunter gifts on our website:. We have some pretty thorough reviews of some of them. Take a look there. Click on the “Hunting Gifts” tab on the left of the Home Page.
I am from the East Coast and went Elk hunting last year in Colorado. I can tell you he will definitely need something to keep him warm. Cabelas has a new boot out that is 2000 grams thinsulate. I would not go without them. I went with my 1500 grams and my feet froze. You can also look into heated gloves/socks and anything else to keep him warm.
If you do look for a rifle, I would look for a .300 Winchester magnum. It is a perfect gun for mule deer and Elk. However, you would need to look hard to find one at a low price.
a good knife is a sure bet. Or you could buy him some cow calls ( i use a Hoochie Mama) or a bugle ( a Mac daddy ) even a good back pack. Or you good give him a gift certificate to have the meat processed. It can run a couple hundred bucks though.
Several pair of warm wool sox.
if he is going to bow hunt the elk, i would get him some new broadheads
If you want to go for a memorable gift, get him a buck knife with his initials engraved. I still have mine my grand father gave me and it has come in handy a lot when hunting.
